Manchester United's offer to sign Harry Maguire could be overturned after a report claims to have refused to meet Leicester's price tag for the defender.

United hope to have a high – level central back before shutting down the transfer window next month and it is widely reported that the English international is in the sights of the Old Trafford giants.

It looks like they made an opening offer of £ 70 million earlier this month, while there were claims last weekend an improved offer of 80 million pounds had been made.

However, it is estimated that United's second offer is just below the world record currently paid for a defender – the £ 75 million spent by Liverpool to recruit Virgil van Dijk in Southampton in January 2018.

And with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly already registered in their books, the national United's board of directors decided to abandon the deal if its bid, estimated at £ 74 million, was not accepted.

And with Leicester claiming to have paid at least 80 million pounds on the defender's head, it seems increasingly difficult for United to finalize an agreement on their summer goal of No.1.

Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers spoke about speculation Tuesday night and stated that the player would only leave if his asking price was reached.

"We do not have to sell Harry," Rodgers said.

"Harry was absolutely brilliant about that from the start. He is a top, a top player and a top guy. I thought it was important for the fans to know it.

"I've already been in this situation with players and it's not always easy, but Harry was absolutely superb. We discussed it, of course.

"He is happy and I take my hat off to him for the way he handled all this because it can be troubling.

"It's a value that has not been reached yet and I support him. He is a special player and we want to keep him but, of course, time will tell. "

Sky sports have claimed that Maguire "frustrated by Leicester's position" as they also supported suggestions that the proposed transfer could now collapse.

"The big problem is that Manchester United offers about 70 million pounds," said Kaveh Solhekol in the Transfer Talk podcast.

"Leicester wants about 80 million pounds, so there is a valuation difference of about 10 million pounds.

"If United were to pay 80 million pounds for him, it would be a world record, more than the 75 million pounds that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.

"I do not think United wants to make him the most expensive defender in the world.

"We are also told that Maguire himself is, I have to choose my words carefully, I do not think that when he looks at himself in the mirror, he sees a player of 70 million pounds.

"I'm sure he thinks he's a very, very good player, but I do not think he thinks it's worth what Leicester is asking him for 80 million pounds."

"This is the situation in which we find ourselves."

In addition, Solskjaer recently hinted that United would not pay too much for playersdespite their obvious need for reinforcements in the back.

"We are still in the market and are looking to do business," said Solskjaer.

"We are patient and we are Man United, we do not have to sell or pay too much. You want good players at the right price. "
