Tamale South MP and Minority Leader in Parliament Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans to establish a football academy in the metropolitan district of Tamale in Ghana.
The MP who has been investing in football for almost a decade or more, believes there are huge untapped talent out there that deserves the chance to unearth them.
“Why am I in football? There is a huge potential of young people with skills and brilliance in football. They need visibility, they need an opportunity and a platform to showcase their skills and talents. “
As part of his plans to push talent to the region, Iddrisu is currently the president of the Division One team, Steadfast FC and they currently sit 2nd in the Zone 3 Division One standings.
The MP decided to continue his quest for research and talent development by starting his own academy in the region. He believes that football has become more than a sport and that countries with incredible talents have a profitable resource.
“It has even now become an exportable product or service. Today it has even become an exportable product or service. Finally, I will develop a football academy in partnership with international and local players. “
The MP described franchising as a franchise that can be “money flowing just like politics” and believes the government needs to take an active role in rebranding and making the sport more economically viable.

You will get next to nothing in return for 4/5 years. I indicated that what Ghana needs to do is pass legislation that targets corporate social responsibility to finance sport. Let us have a legal framework that the social entities of companies will make a contribution to support the development of football to support the development and identification of talents in football. Support our football teams, whether national or first division, but embrace them as part of their corporate social responsibility. It’s ethical and fuels money for those purposes. I’m a strong supporter of this and we’ll see how we push it further.
He also reiterated the need to keep politics away from football as it is one of the many factors hampering its development in the country.
“We need to rename our football and remove the partisanship from it. For example, find merit in a Randy Abbey regardless of its politics. If you find merit in Kojo Frimpong as a sports enthusiast, forget his politics and make the best use of his skills and talent. I think in Ghana we are just burying our opportunities with our excessive partisanship. Football should never be or be seen as a partisan activity. “
