Harvard University and US apparel company Levi Strauss & Co have announced a collaboration with think tank New America to develop a chain factory security system, Reuters reported on Jan. 24.
The new system is intended to eventually replace the external health and safety auditors of the factories with self-reporting infrastructure by the workers. Dr. Eileen McNeely, Director of Harvard TH Chan's Health and Sustainability Initiative at NetPositive Enterprise said, "Over the past 25 years, work in supply chains has been controlled primarily by audits. .
Three Levi Strauss plants in Mexico employing 5,000 workers would be the first to use the system this year. Another pilot project is planned for next year. The system will put an annual security survey on a blockchain.
The survey would use an index developed by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Allison Price, Executive Director of Blockchain Trust Accelerator at New America, said placing the survey result on a blockchain meant that "the results would never be manipulated".
The blockchain would be provided by ConsenSys, the blockchain company founded by Joseph Lubin, one of the original authors of Ethereum (ETH). According to Reuters, the development of the system is funded by a grant from the US Department of State.
As Cointelegraph recently reported, recent layoffs at Consensys have affected approximately 10% of its staff, including both in support roles and in technical roles. Last December, reports revealed that the company was about to lay off between 50 and 60 percent of its employees.
