Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted his side’s shots at Manchester United had been ‘horrific’ and helped his players recover after their second 9-0 Premier League loss in two seasons.
Newbie Alexander Jankewitz’s red card for a horror tackle after two minutes sparked a surrender from the Saints which ended in the same scoreline as their loss to Leicester in October 2019.
Hassenhuttl told BBC Sport: ‘What can I say? It’s horrible but we got up after the first 9-0 and we have to start over.
“I said back then that we don’t need it anymore, but when we have it again, you have to take it.
“ When you come here with two goalkeepers on the bench, I wanted to give a few young guys [the chance] to show oneself.
“When I saw what was going on, you better take them out because 9-0 for a start is not a good score to have.”
Jan Bednarek, who scored an own goal as the visitors finished the first half 4-0, was sent off four minutes after conceding a penalty for a foul on Anthony Martial.
Discussing the sacking and reckless slot of Swiss midfielder Alex Jankewitz over Scott McTominay, Hasenhuttl declined to comment on Mike Dean’s official performance.
Hasenhuttl said: “ Jan Bednarek isn’t killing him but I don’t want to talk about the referee.
“Last week he was our VAR and made his mark in the game. It was a stupid foul on the young boy’s part and it kills everything.
The mauling exhausted Southampton’s fourth consecutive Premier League loss, leaving them with just one league win in 2021.
Hasenhuttl admitted to BT Sport: “ It’s hard enough to compete here without knocking a man down. With all the players we miss right now, it’s even more difficult.
“ We tried to keep the sheet clean in the second half as long as possible, but … yes, it was difficult to defend.
‘We got up after the first [9-0 defeat] and we will also rise after this one. It’s okay.’
