The Ghana National Fishermen’s Council (GNFC) supported the appointment of the Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson following the media outcry that hailed his recent scrutiny in Parliament.

According to the association, the fuss that was generated on traditional and social media following his appearance before Parliament’s ministerial audit committee was unnecessary and distracted attention from relevant issues that arose during the fiscal year. .

A press release published on February 23, 2021 by the association reads in part: “As fishermen, our main concern and our expectations are how the designated minister intends to tackle thorny issues like the Seiko, the light fishing, the influx of foreign fishing vessels, and the need for a foreign vessel to conduct scientific research, among others.

The statement further read: “We share the sentiments of several well-meaning Ghanaians who, since the fallout from the verification exercise, felt that fluency in the English language is not necessarily a sign of competence. The honorable minister designate will certainly work with technocrats and industry players who also care about the progress of the sector. As a result, we encourage the media to set an agenda for a liberal conversation about how the promises made clear in the current government’s manifesto will be carried out against the content of the oversight exercise. ”

It will be recalled that on February 18, 2021, the designated Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson took his turn on the parliamentary ministerial selection committee. Following the exercise, the media space was inundated with comments about his perceived lack of fluency in the English language.
