• Elmina fishermen will continue to observe the closed season

• This is because they refused to heed the minister’s directive on illegal fishing

• The minister explained that it had become necessary for her ministry to control the fishermen

As a punishment for fishermen to stop illegal fishing activities, Elmina fishermen will continue to observe the closed season despite the reopening of the sea for artisanal and coastal fleets, said the Minister of Fisheries and of Aquaculture.

Mavis Hawa Koomson told JoyNews in a report monitored by GhanaWeb that fishermen refuse to heed his campaign against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, so it became necessary for the ministry to monitor Elmina fishermen.

“After my presentation on Tuesday June 27, they said that I said they should stop the Saiko and the light fishing they were not happy with and so I should rescind that statement and said no. I wasn’t ready so they said if I wasn’t going to back off I had to take back the items I brought for them and I did.

“Now they are begging, they have come to apologize, I am told that they had a press conference, one of the chief fishermen is there to apologize but we still have to punish them for that, I do not won’t hide it, ”said Hawa Koomson.

The minister said fishermen will also be denied pre-mixed fuel as well as other fishing logistics that will be of great help to them until they are willing to comply with the guidelines set out to combat fishing. illegal.

For his part, Joseph Heman Asmah, the 2019 best national fisherman who represented the fishing community of Elmina called on Mavis Hawa Koomson to reconsider his decision.

He said, “The fishermen were sitting patiently waiting to hear from the minister, but the boy gurus did, so I have to be here and apologize.

“If the woman says she won’t give us a premix, where will we get a premix?” If the woman says she won’t give us outboard motors at the test price, where are we going to get some to buy? Whenever we are in need and we go there and she closes her door on us, those who did will not feel it, ”pleaded Asmah.
