Hawaiian Airlines said that Flight 33 to Maui had been forced to get to the Los Angeles International Airport gate three times for three separate problems before it was finally canceled.

Spokesman Alex Da Silva said the plane had taken off and landed twice on Saturday. A third time, the airliner pushed back the door and came back.

Da Silva said that each return was "due to separate and unrelated errors with different systems". He did not elaborate.

Da Silva says that Flight 33 is clbadified as "long-range operations" because of the distance between LAX and Kahului Airport in Maui.

"These flights have stricter security requirements because of the greater distance between the appropriate airports," said the airline. "When there is an anomaly on a land flight, it can, and often continues, up to its destination.

"However, ETOPS flights meet more stringent safety standards. Our aircraft have redundant systems, but our standard is to respond to any indication of abnormality with great caution."
