There is a new measles alert in Melbourne after a young man has arrived in the city after contracting the infectious disease between states.

He remains isolated and is treated at the hospital.

The Victorian health authorities warned Tuesday that the man could have been contagious by going to public places in Melbourne last week.

He flew Thursday to Brisbane Airport, before taking a connecting flight to Canberra which set him on the road to the Victorian capital.

After arriving in Melbourne, the man took a shuttle from the airport to Nomads All National Youth Hostel, in Spencer Street, where he stayed until Sunday.

He also attended a 7-Eleven on Spencer Street last Friday and at the warehouse pharmacy on Bourke Street the next day.

Victoria Public Health Officer Brett Sutton said the case was a timely reminder to ensure that people are vaccinated.

"Any unvaccinated person is at greatest risk of getting measles," he said, adding that people needing two doses of vaccine to be fully protected.

This case is not related to a case that has just been revealed of a woman who had attended the Melbourne Formula 1 GP while she was contagious.

Measles is highly contagious and its symptoms include fever, severe cough, conjunctivitis and coryza, followed by a rash starting in the face.

Measles patients can be contagious about five days before and four days after the onset of rash.
