You may want to think twice before letting your kids play in the ball pits found in many popular restaurants and amusement parks.

A new study shows that they are often dirty and filled with bacteria.

Researchers at the University of North Georgia inspected six pits in the United States and found 31 different types of bacteria, according to Kidspot.

One of the pits had an astonishing average of 170,818 bacteria per shot.

According to Kidspot, many pits had not been cleaned for days or even weeks.

The bacteria found could cause various medical problems, including bladder infections, meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis and rashes, among others.

The study from the University of North Georgia was first published in the American Journal of Infection Control.
