SAN JOSE, California (KTVU) – Health officials from Santa Clara County said that an adult resident of San Mateo County, infected with the measles virus, was in a Google office last week. It was unclear whether they visited the Mountain View headquarters or a satellite office located elsewhere in Santa Clara County.
Sara Cody, head of health for Santa Clara County, said the situation is being monitored, but vaccination rates in Santa Clara County are very high.
"The vast majority of the population is protected," Cody said at the Wednesday afternoon press conference. "Is there anyone who has been exposed who is not protected?" Posed Cody as a matter that the health authorities are facing.
At the same time, health officials in San Mateo County are struggling to find out where the person with measles could have traveled.
Marianna Moles, public health spokeswoman for Santa Clara County, said the Google show did not pose any additional risk to the public. Santa Clara County has recently witnessed four unrelated measles cases. Cody said there were no secondary cases of measles among these incidents.
Dr. Cody briefly explained the contact investigation process: "You must try to understand: where was the exposure, who might have been exposed and who might need follow up."
Health officials in Santa Clara County said they were informed of the exposure last week. Cody said the range of symptoms appearing from the moment you are exposed to the measles virus is about 7 to 21 days old.
Measles is very contagious. Health officials said that when there was a case, they took special precautions by diverting staff from their usual work to treat them in cases of measles.
The California Department of Public Health regularly updates the information on measles on its website. There are currently a total of two cases in San Mateo County, one in San Francisco, the four cases mentioned above in Santa Clara County and one case in Santa Cruz.
