Health officials issued an alert after some travelers at Pearson Airport in Toronto were exposed to measles.
According to Peel Public Health, the possible exposure would have occurred on January 27, 2019.
People in the following areas of the airport that day may have been exposed:
- Flight Lufthansa LH-470, Frankfurt to Toronto (Pearson airport, arrival at 16:08)
- Air Canada Flight AC-834 or LH-6829 from Toronto (Pearson Airport, departure at 18:00) to Montreal
- Pearson International Airport (Terminal 1) on January 27, 2019 from 16:00 to 20:00
Anyone who may have been exposed should do the following:
- Check your vaccination record to make sure that you and your children have received two doses of measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV). Your vaccination card (yellow card) or your doctor can provide you with this information. Adults 18 years and older born in 1970 or later require one dose of measles vaccine; children aged 12 months to less than 18 years, health care workers and adults attending post-secondary institutions are required to receive two doses; those born before 1970 are generally considered immune.
- If your vaccination record is not up to date, contact your local public health unit. To find the public health unit in your area.
- Infants under one year old, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems can be very affected by measles and should contact their health care professional immediately for further evaluation.
- Monitor the symptoms of measles until 21 days after exposure. These include high fever, cold-like symptoms (cough / runny nose); sore eyes or sensitivity to light; small spots with a white center inside the mouth; and a red rash lasting four to seven days.
If you think you have measles and you need to see a doctor, you should call the doctor's office, the walk-in clinic or the emergency department. This will allow the health staff to take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and to protect people going to the office, clinic or hospital.
