The central regional capital, Cape Coast, and its surroundings were besieged by flooding yesterday after several hours of rain.
Ghana’s National Fire Service has spent hours pumping water into the affected areas and in some cases had to break down the walls of houses to save residents.
Many schools, including the University of Cape Coast (UCC), had to suspend their activities for the day, while most shops remained closed.
The affected areas included Pedu, Abura, Academy and the PPAG office area, Eyifua, the Nokaans hotel area and UCC.
No deaths have been recorded, however.

UCC’s director of public affairs Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (retired) said the university made the decision to ensure the safety of students and faculty.
He noted that the university had done a lot of engineering work to contain the flooding, but that didn’t seem to have completely resolved the challenge in its entirety.
“We have done what we have to do with the engineering, but if the rains are too heavy, the flooding cannot be avoided,” he said.

Recurrent flooding
Cape Coast has been the target of flooding lately.
On October 30, 2019, many residents were virtually locked in their homes after about six hours of rain.
