The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides that pet hedgehogs are "probably" to blame for an outbreak of salmonella in eight states.
Tiny and pungent creatures can be cute, but according to a new report, an ongoing investigation into lab tests shows that pet hedgehogs are likely to be causing a salmonella outbreak that has affected 11 people in eight states.
No deaths have been reported, but one person has been hospitalized, according to WTKR. Ten of the eleven confirmed having been in contact with a hedgehog before falling ill.
Symptoms of salmonella include: fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps and can last anywhere from four to seven days. Most people recover without treatment. however, some may suffer from serious illness in rare cases if they are not treated promptly.
Pet experts say that hedgehogs should have the opportunity to walk around because they can become depressed or fat otherwise. The CDC recommends that you do not allow these animals to roam freely in areas where you prepare food.
