Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey is demanding the immediate transfer of the Municipal Environmental Health Officer (MEHO) for Ayawaso Central Municipality, Emmanuel Sonni Alohleveh.
This is because Mr. Sonni Alohleveh did not show up for work for two weeks without permission.
Mr. Quartey, who is also the deputy of Ayawaso Central, launched Tuesday, July 27 in an exercise of decongestion of the municipality.
He was alarmed at the volume of garbage piled up in the sewers and on the shoulders of the road, asking where the municipal environmental health officer was, who was nowhere to be found.
“Where’s your MEHO?” Madam, I want the MEHO to be transferred. I don’t want him here anymore. He has to leave the riding today. He is no longer going to work here, ”Quartey said.
Explaining the absence of MEHO, Municipal Coordination Director Eugenia Agbenyegah said Sonni Alohleveh requested a two-week leave for medical reasons, but failed to provide an apology report.
“He actually asked my permission,” she said. “For four weeks? Mr. Quartey questioned.
“No, not for four weeks, it’s just two weeks please, he’s not doing well,” Ms. Agbenyegah replied.
The regional minister was not convinced, however, insisting on the immediate transfer of the municipal head of environmental health.
“So, is he telling you he’s not okay?” There is no medical form to officially indicate that he is not well. It’s a government business, please, if he’s not feeling well he should go get someone else from work, ”he said.
Walking the streets as part of the “Make Accra work” program, the team stopped in Panaman, where several containers built along the drains were demolished.
“Who’s the owner? Okay, task force, start breaking up from here, go ahead, break it up! The owner will come, don’t worry,” Mr. Quartey could be heard saying.
Amid tears and angry rants, the owners of the structures attempted to stop the officials from doing their jobs. But the police intervened to restore order.
Their last stop was Alajo, where a church auditorium just off the main Alajo drain was demolished.
MCE for Ayawaso Central, Alhaji Mohammed Quaye, who was upset by the filth in his locality, said prosecution of sanitation violators will escalate under his watch.
“I urged my MEHOs to come here frequently and then summon the sanitation violators to court. The prosecutions will now be intensified vigorously and this, I believe, will help reduce this threat, ”he said.
