Microsoft should hold a major press conference at MWC Barcelona later in the day. In the presence of Satya Nadella and Alex Kipman, it has long been expected that the company will take advantage of the event to present the next version of its HoloLens mixed reality headset. Just hours before the event, the Twitter user WalkingCat ruined at least some of the surprise by revealing four images of the new device.
These are the first images of the new HoloLens that we saw. The new version seems to have improved padding and seems generally more comfortable to wear, but that's about all we can say about the device so far. The images also show roughly the same layout of the camera and the sensor of the old device. There is a good chance that today's events will be full of surprises.
One of the images shows a user typing a menu item, for example. This is a move that is currently not supported by HoloLens 1, but that would make a huge difference in the user experience. The current tapping and blooming gestures work, but are not really elegant or fast.
What everyone wants to know is that the new device offers a better field of vision. The first prototypes presented by Microsoft had a wide field of vision that allowed you to feel immersed in the experience of computer-aided research. The production version, however, has not been up to par, though, in my own experience, it only takes a few minutes for your brain to compensate for the limited field of view.
