SPRING HILL, Fla. – A Spring Hill campaign club official announced that all of his employees had been vaccinated against hepatitis A after a food service worker was infected with the virus.
Wayne Connolly of the Silverthorn Country Club said that a professional cleaning team had also been hired to disinfect and that the health department had felt that the location was safe.
Virginia Crandall of the Florida Department of Health in Hernando County said more than 1,000 people were exposed to the virus in Silverthorn last month.
This includes high school students in Springstead and downtown who held their prom.

"I was nervous and upset about it," said Tammy Paynter, who has a school-aged son who could have been exposed to the virus. "I have received a call from the school three times."
Hepatitis A is spread by fecal-oral contamination and can be held in check by washing your hands properly.

"So when people are in the bathroom, do not wash their hands and do not touch surfaces, the virus can stay on the surface for weeks," Crandall said. "This virus is not killed by a hand sanitizer. The hand sanitizer is great for many germs but not for hepatitis A. So it's good old fashioned, with lots of soapy water and friction. "
Health officials said that in response to the case of hepatitis A and the concerns surrounding it, they have vaccinated more than 500 people in Hernando County since Wednesday.
