Hidalgo County investigates other possible cases of mumps

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Health authorities in Hidalgo County are investigating five other possible cases of mumps.

The first confirmed case came from a student at the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley, at the Edinburg campus.

But Eduardo Olivarez, director of health and social services in Hidalgo County, said he felt the source of the virus was not the university.

Olivarez also confirmed that the disease was not generated by the county's immigrant community.

An alert has been launched to the attention of local doctors for her to test mumps in patients with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headaches and loss of appetite.
