A high court in Accra has overruled its decision to grant bail to a murder suspect, Gregory Afoko, illegally placed in police custody for 120 days.
On March 14, 2019, the court ordered the release of the man tried for the alleged murder of the chairman of the NPP regional party, Adams Mahama, in 2015.
But this order was ignored by the state for four months. During this period, two attempts to overturn the decision before the High Court and then the Court of Appeal, both failed.
Members of the public have criticized the Akufo-Addo government for keeping Gregory Afoko in detention. The detention questioned the government's respect for the law and its record on human rights.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been indicted for contempt of court for disobeying the lawful order.
Judge George Buadi, President of the High Court of Accra, was due to render a judgment on 3 July 2019.
