High-level political forum on sustainable development begins in New York

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 9 July 2019 (CEA) – The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) meeting begins today in New York to badess global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. focused on quality education and decent work, equality, climate change, justice and partnerships.

At least 47 countries are ready to take the floor to present their efforts in implementing the SDGs at the meeting convened under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The meeting will be held from Tuesday, July 9 to Thursday, July 18, 2019, and will include a ministerial meeting of the three-day forum, from Tuesday, July 16 to Thursday, July 18, 2019.

The theme of the HLPF for 2019 is "Empowering People and Ensuring Inclusion and Equality".

"We are excited about this meeting, especially four years after the launch of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Development to 2030. The HLPF is an integral part of everything we do to implement the program. This gives us the opportunity to share and learn from others to take stock of our origins, "said Mr. Oliver Chinganya, director of the African Center for Statistics of ECA, also a member of the OIC. At least 47 countries will share their efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals during the HLPF, bringing to more than 140 the number of countries that have attended the HLPF since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Program at the HLPF. 39, horizon 2030 in 2015.

The SDGs are a global agenda adopted by countries in 2015 with the vision of ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring peace and prosperity for all people.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the 169 Targets are part of the 2030 Agenda which recognizes "that the eradication of poverty in all its forms and in all its dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and a prerequisite for sustainable development ".

The objectives to be examined in depth at the 2019 HLPF are:

Goal 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Goal 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Goal 10. Reduce inequalities in and between countries

Objective 13. Take urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts

Goal 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

Around 1,000 participants from around the world are expected to attend this year's FPHN Forum.
