The North West Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Sam Awudu Dramani, warned leaders in Africa, and indeed Ghana, to educate young people on the dangers of intolerance and radicalization to prevent them from being misled.
He said rising youth unemployment makes it easier for any extremist group to recruit them because “the Bible says the devil finds work for idle hands.”
Speaking at a workshop in Bibiani on violent extremist activities among young people, the regional NCCE boss noted that it was time for leaders to tackle unemployment which poses a threat to national security .
“As the Bible says, the devil finds work for the idle hands, so it is easy for young people to become radicalized. If someone picks them up and trains them anyway, they’ll heed and do what these religious extremists want.
“The way some people are busy attracting and indoctrinating young people with certain beliefs and making them intolerant of others, the condition of teeming unemployed youth gives them a very fertile ground to operate,” he noted. .
The workshop which was under the theme; We are One, Ghana First, attracted youth and youth activists from various parts of the North West region.
The Commission, together with the European Union, jointly organized the workshop with the aim of first informing young people about the dangers of associating with religious extremists and radicals, and of peaceful coexistence with people of various beliefs.
Mr. Awudu Dramani noted that due to Ghana’s close relations with Nigeria, some negative events in that country could be replicated in the country, citing the danger that Boko Haram might recruit people in Ghana.
“These are just some of the reasons we are calling to open their eyes and educate young people to know that Ghana’s acceptance of democracy has its principles and precepts and that some of them are breathtaking, it’s about sitting around the table… even the protests people are going into are part of democracy, ”he said.
He said young people should not be oppressed in any form or suppressed when expressing their concerns at protests.
This, he stressed, reduces the nerves to give in to the seductions of certain extremists.
“Because when there is violence in a country, it can lead to death, it can lead to loss of property, even at this time when the nation has made positive progress, we demand more, but when there is violence, our small infrastructure would be destroyed, ”he warns.
