Hill's Recalls Canned Dog Foods for Excess Vitamin D

Hill's Pet Nutrition has issued a national reminder for some of its canned dog foods, as they could contain high levels of vitamin D. These excessive levels could lead to health problems, including kidney dysfunction.

The problem was discovered after a dog in the United States had high levels of vitamin D. The company said that an investigation had revealed that an error of the supplier was responsible.

The company said the symptoms may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive salivation and weight loss. Owners who see their dogs present these signs should contact their veterinarian. The company said that, in most cases, pets will recover completely after stopping feeding the recalled foods.

The food was sold in pet shops and veterinary clinics. Owners are advised to discard food or return unopened cans to the retailer.

Hill's stated that neither dry foods, nor cat foods, nor treats are affected.
