HUNTINGTON – The West Virginia Public Health Bureau has announced 44 confirmed cases of HIV in Cabell County.
The Herald-Dispatch reports that HIV has mainly spread among intravenous drug users in Cabell County. According to a recent study by Johns Hopkins, Cabell County has 1,800 intravenous drug users.
The Herald-Dispatch reports that the HIV cluster in Cabell County is currently the only cluster located in West Virginia, but the DHHR is calling for an increase in testing throughout the state.
The West Virginia Public Health Bureau has called the situation a cluster and not an epidemic. A group is confined to a certain population, where it can be controlled with minimal risk to the public, reports The Herald-Dispatch.
Cabell County has set up a needle exchange program, according to The Herald-Dispatch. The fellowship has been working at the Cabell-Huntington Health Department since 2015.
The Herald-Dispatch reports that it is the first significant HIV group in the state where the leading risk factor has been identified as injecting drug use.
