Hong Kong leader pursues extradition bill despite protests

The Hong Kong government chief promised Monday to pbad a controversial law allowing extraditions to the Chinese mainland, despite the fact that one million people are marching against the government.

Carrie Lam told reporters that the law was needed and that she promised that human rights would be preserved.

"No one wants Hong Kong to be a refuge for fugitive offenders," she said. "This is a very important bill that will help uphold justice and ensure that Hong Kong meets its international obligations with respect to cross-border and transnational crimes."

Critics say the law will allow China to target its political opponents.

The peaceful demonstration that took place Sunday in the city center was turned into violence when several hundred protesters clashed with the police, who reacted with a pepper spray.

While organizers say that one million people took part in the march, police estimate 240,000 people. Chinese official media said the "foreign forces" were behind the demonstrations.

The debate on the law will resume in Parliament on Wednesday.
