About one-fifth of all hot meals served in the NHS are prepared in a single factory in Wiltshire.

Once frozen and tested, they are kept in a storage unit near the M5 in Bristol for two months before being delivered.

In addition, the unusual products manufactured by Apetito can be stored for up to a year before they reach the patients.

It is thought that the NHS buys half of all its hot meals from external suppliers.

Questions have been raised about its dependence on mbad-produced food since the listeria epidemic that killed five people in May.

And activists are skeptical about the use of cooked meals. Rob Percival of the Soil Association said patients "deserve real food".

But Paul Freeston, chief executive of Apetito, who was not involved in the listeria scandal, said public perception of mbad-produced foods was "out of date."

He added, "Our system is to serve patients when [the food] is at its best. "
