How Liverpool changed the life of Gini Wijnaldum as the midfielder shares the unpublished memories of the UEFA Champions League with Jurgen Klopp

From bombardment by Jurgen Klopp of YouTube clips to constant congratulations all over the world, Gini Wijnaldum knew one thing.

Helping Liverpool win its sixth European Cup meant that life was never the same for the friendly Dutchman.

Even during his summer vacation, Wijnaldum was continuously informed of what he and his teammates the Reds had achieved by beating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid last month.

Not that it bothers him, of course.

"It changed my life because you will always be a winner of the Champions League," says Wijnaldum. "There are many excellent players who did not win this trophy, so it is special.

"It's the biggest club you can win because you're playing against the biggest clubs. Around the world, everyone is watching the Champions League.

"Wherever you go, every day everyone reminds you, everyone wants to talk about it. They all want to talk about how we've won it six times and what they felt. You can not avoid that.

"I've seen it during my holidays, I came to America and everyone wanted to talk to me about Madrid. I was in Miami, Los Angeles, Dubai, I was in Holland – I moved!

"When I talk to people, they do not tell me how disappointed they are not to win the Premier League, they want to talk about the Champions League, but we wanted to win both! .

"But win the Champions League, yes, we will always remember you as a legend."

Liverpool supporters have found the events of the Champions League final to be a source of almost infinite content on social networks, with new images and videos popping up almost daily.

And Wijnaldum revealed how much the Reds boss, Klopp, wanted to share such joy.

"He sent me one!" Laughs the midfielder. "It was a video that starts where we lost the final in Kiev and shows our progress from there.

"The manager sent me that during the summer, so it was good to watch and remember all those moments and games."

The European Cup was Liverpool's first silverware under Klopp, putting an end to a doubt as to whether the German was the man who was to restore success to Anfield.

The Reds will once again aim big this season, with the Premier League title – just one point behind Manchester City – again at the forefront.

Asked if winning trophies was like drugs, Wijnaldum said, "Yes. We now know what it is to win something, not just that, to celebrate with the city as well.

"It's not just the team, the people working here, it's the fans, the city, it's like the whole world was happy when we won it!

"You have the feeling that you are not doing it only for yourself, you are making so many people happy and it is probably the biggest addiction for a player."

Wijnaldum adds: "We want to try to win the Champions League again and try to win even more.

"I think it's a question of consistency. In the Premier League, it is so difficult to collect the number of points we got last season. And City has done it twice!

"This is the challenge we face. But we have a team that can do it and we want to try to do better than last year. Hope we can bring more titles to Liverpool. "

Wijnaldum was speaking during the current tour of the United States in Liverpool, the Reds having already lost to Borussia Dortmund at Notre Dame and Sevilla at Fenway Park in Boston.

They ended with a clash against Sporting Lisbon in New York on Wednesday, and the impressive level of support from North American fans did not go unnoticed.

"It's always a surprise for me," says Wijnaldum. "Sometimes we forget the size of the club abroad, then we go to places like this and we see the support, we see how happy people are and how much people want to celebrate."

What is not surprising is that his compatriot Virgil van Dijk becomes Ballon d'Or later in the year.

Wijnaldum, however, indicates the growing number of other world-clbad players residing in Anfield.

"Virgil deserves to be in the running," he says. "But I also think that (Sadio) Mane and Alisson too! I do not know how many gloves Golden Alisson has, but that's a lot!

"It's hard to say. I do not know what they are looking for, it's a reward for the best player, but often the best player is the one who wins the most, so we'll see. But none of these three deserve it.
