A parasite called cryptosporidium that can cause diarrhea and vomiting recently made headlines because of an upsurge in infections in US pools and water parks.

Crypto is a particularly worrying aquatic parasite because it is very resistant to chlorine. This means that it can survive more than a week even in properly chlorinated and maintained pools.

But many other germs live long enough in the pool to make you sick. Here are some of the most common ones, including Pseudomonas, Shigella, Giarda, Norovirus and Legionella. If you're not careful, these uninvited guests may cause diarrhea, rashes, vomiting and pneumonia at your next pool party.
