We all know the story. Instead of living happily ever after, Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a disastrous marriage. Their union was perhaps doomed even before it started because they had only met a dozen times before getting engaged and they both had doubts about their relationship. on the attachment of the knot before the day of their marriage.
Shortly after saying "I do," things started to fall apart and Diana learned that Charles had an affair with her ex, Camilla Parker Bowles. This devastated the princess and she aroused the sympathy of Charles's father, Prince Philip. This is what the Duke of Edinburgh did to try to save their marriage.
Philip first told Charles to have an affair
After Princess Diana discovered that Charles was cheating on her with Camilla, she decided to confront them. When she spoke to her husband, however, he acted as though it was perfectly acceptable that he was cheating on her with another woman because of her royal status.
"I refuse to be the only Prince of Wales to have ever had a mistress," Charles told him.
According to Diana, it is Prince Philip who put this idea in his head.
"My father-in-law said to my husband," If your marriage does not work, you can still find it after five years, "Diana said in her recordings." Which is exactly – I mean, in reality I knew that had happened after five [years] – I knew that something was happening before, but the fifth year, I had confirmation.
Prince Philip tried to save his son and Diana's marriage
If the Duke of Edinburgh had told Charles to have an affair, he certainly did not think that the future king would leave his wife to his mistress. And because of that, Philip tried to intervene with the couple and even wrote to the princess to express his support and willingness to help him.
In one of the letters, Philip was frank in his son's "idiotic" case.
"Charles was foolish to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position," writes the duke. "We never imagined that he might want to leave you for her. I can not imagine that someone cleverly leaves you for Camilla. Such a perspective has never even entered our minds. "
In other letters, Diana thanked him for being "so eager to help". But after a few months of trial and error, Philip's attempts to bring them to reconciliation no longer worked and he decided to throw out the sponge as follows: "I can only repeat what I have already said. If I am invited, I will always do my best to help you and Charles to the best of my ability. But I am quite ready to admit that I have no talent as a marriage counselor !!!
Charles and Diana were ordered to divorce
In the end, there was nothing the patriarch of the royal family could do and the Prince and Princess of Wales were asked to divorce his wife, Queen Elizabeth.
Because the public now knew how much their relationship had deteriorated, Her Majesty decided that it was best to end their marriage and wrote separate letters advising them to do so.
After reviewing the current situation, the Queen wrote to the Prince and Princess earlier this week and told them of her point of view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable ", says a statement from the palace.
Charles and Diana agreed and their divorce was finalized in August 1996, a year before the Princess's untimely death.
In April 2005, Prince Charles married Camilla. Neither Philip nor the Queen attended the civil wedding ceremony.
