Something as simple as a cup of tea and a discussion can make a big difference to a person who lives lonely.

This is the message of the Samaritans who are trying to turn blue Monday into Monday.

The third Monday in January is often described as Blue Monday and seems to be the most difficult day of the year.

So, the charity launched its #BrewMonday initiative to encourage people to take the time to talk to a friend who may be feeling alone over a cup of tea.

Samaritan volunteers were walking around the country's train stations, distributing free tea bags and information about their services.

In the meantime, the police and fire departments are also involved, sending the message that it is "acceptable not to be".

Help turn #Monday blue in #BrewMonday taking five to put the kettle and chat with a friend or colleague. ☕️

Dr. Alex George from Love Island and DJ Gemma Cairney's Radio are urging people to make themselves known.

Celebrities such as comedian Matt Lucas and boxer Audley Harrison have also been involved in publicizing an event specifically designed to educate youth about loneliness.

Today is #BrewMonday a very vital campaign to help:

Promote conversation, listening and well-being
✅ help provide support that makes a real difference in the lives of thousands of people
Make this cup of coffee and chat with your friends, it helps pic.twitter.com/uWSEpqqt54

I think the Samaritans are an amazing charity, so I support them #BrewMonday campaign wholeheartedly.

Should we call our friends today, check and see if their ok? Invite your neighbor for a beer? Let's try to remove the blue from this Monday together !? https://t.co/5xfSaCdYKq

Samaritans' research among 18 to 24-year-olds suggests that loneliness plays an important role in suicidal thoughts among youth.

Ruth Sutherland, Executive Director of Samaritans, said, "For too long, loneliness among young people has not been taken seriously. It is time to remedy the situation and listen to what they tell us.

"Local areas desperately need more funds for appropriate services and opportunities across our communities that help young people to be listened to and get all the help they need."

And the campaign seemed to have an immediate effect.

The usual train was canceled and had to wait an hour at Milton Keynes Cntl. Instead of looking in my phone, I took @samaritains #BrewMonday inspiration, took a tea, sat down and chatted with a few people around me. All the insignificant little discussions on Monday morning, but #SmallTalkSavesLives.

Today I am on @MHFAEngland Of course, I will give priority to my breaks to discuss with my colleagues, my wonderful delegate, over a cup of tea. I will also use this week as an opportunity to form new relationships, so a #BrewWeek not just a #BrewMonday ? https://t.co/zfu5yCanik
