Rock school Actor Rivkah Reyes revealed that the film’s ending was the brainchild of fellow cast member Kevin Clark, who was only 13 at the time.
“The end hasn’t landed,” Reyes said in a video on TIC Tac. (H / T Insider) “We tried a version where we win [the Battle of the Bands competition]. We tried another version where we lose and that’s it. It just didn’t hit. The team was just like, “What are we doing about this ending?” And Kevin is just like, ‘It would be cool if like, we lost and then the audience started clapping,’ School of Rock! School of rock! ‘ and then they bring us in for an encore. ‘”
Reyes added, “So this guy, at 13, wrote the end of School of Rock.” The film ends exactly as Clark suggested, with the band – led by guitarist-turned-teacher-turned-teacher Dewey Finn (Jack Black) – returning to the stage despite being defeated to perform It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Will. rock’n’roll).
Clark played Freddy “Spazzy McGee” Jones, the band’s drummer, while Reyes was bassist Katie “Posh Spice”. Clark died earlier this year after a car accident; he did not star in another major film after his role in School of Rock, but continued to work as a musician. Directed by Richard Linklater, the film was released in 2003 and also starred Mike White, Joan Cusack and Sarah Silverman.
