New Delhi, July 7 (IANS): It's not just dogs, but cats can also be your furry friends. If you have one, understand how to maintain their nutritional needs so that cats have a healthy lifestyle, experts say.
Lack of adequate knowledge about the essential nutrients required by their diet can be detrimental to the health and growth of the cat.
Gaurav Kwatra, director of PURINA PetCare India, who recently launched PURINA FRISKIES, a premium food brand for cats in India, and veterinarian Hitesh Swali shared some key points to keep in mind during the choice of food suitable for cats:
* Cats have unique nutritional needs: nutrients such as taurine must be included in their diet because they are unable to produce enough food naturally. A deficiency of taurine can lead to a number of conditions in which the health of their heart and eyes can be seriously affected.
* Cats need more protein: Adult cats need about 44% more protein than adult dogs. If the protein intake is insufficient, the cat will begin to break down its own body proteins to meet its energy needs. This high protein content must also be accompanied by essential amino acids, essential fatty acids and vitamins such as A and D.
* Cats are difficult eaters: It is necessary to provide cats with an exciting meal experience. Although a complete diet is extremely important for cats, it is equally important to delight their senses through croquettes of different shapes and delicious aromas.
* Cats enjoy small meals: Unlike dogs, cats munch and eat many small meals throughout the day. It is therefore important that foods are nutritionally balanced and provide the right nutrients in sufficient quantities.
* Cats can not survive with a vegetarian diet: they are obligate carnivores. It is therefore impossible to satisfy their needs with a vegetarian diet. Cats also have different nutritional needs and different ways their bodies badimilate nutrients; therefore, cat food developed by nutritionists meets these unique needs.
