A study published today in Mayo Clinic Acts have found that exercise – whether it is bodybuilding, strength training or cardio – actually reduces unhealthy visceral fat. Visceral fat is located deep in the belly, which gives all our precious organs an indispensable cushioning, but too much visceral fat often causes high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Study participants were required to take medication, exercise, or both, over a six-month period. Overall, exercise was much better at melting visceral fat.
Of course, weight is part of the equation of exercise, but this study goes beyond the numbers on the scale and examines the overall health of the person. Dr. Ian J. Neeland, cardiologist and lead author of the study, told mbg, "Just losing weight with exercise does not mean that you are not making great progress in reducing visceral fat. "
