(HealthDay) -If you're looking for an ice-cold treat that will not spoil your diet, pbad on soft drinks from the store and make your own.
Some prepackaged soft drinks may be calorie, but many contain dyes and preservatives. It's easy to make your own, and you can use ingredients that are beneficial to the intestine, such as kefir (a cultured milk drink), fresh fruit and dark chocolate.
Think of kefir as a yoghurt cousin with a similar tangy taste. It is rich in protein and loaded with probiotic cultures, up to 11 different strains compared to one or two strains found in most yogurts. This is great in frozen recipes because freezing does not kill beneficial crops. Plus, its texture is a bit thinner than yogurt, making it ideal for freezing with berries and other healthy supplements, like naturally sweet cocoa nibs.
The feathers are cracked whole cocoa beans. They are rich in antioxidants and give you a good dose of fiber and a nice tightening. You can usually find them at health food stores or order them online. A bag of feathers will keep for months in your refrigerator, but you will probably use them very quickly.
Frozen kefir pops
- 1 cup of natural kefir 2%
- 1 tablespoon of honey or sweetener of your choice
- 1 cup of pitted berries or cherries
- 4 teaspoons of cocoa
Place the kefir and honey or sweetener in a small bowl and mix. Divide the fruit and cocoa chips into four pop molds that are safe for freezing. Fill them with the kefir mixture and add the pop inserts. Transfer to the freezer for three hours or until firm, then serve.
