PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Often a silent killer, one in three women will die from heart disease.
February is American Heart Month, which means it's time to think about your heart health and the steps you can take to keep your ticker in top form.
West Virginia ranks eleventh in the country of heart disease.
Being the number one killer of men and women, recognizing the symptoms of heart disease, such as arm or chest pain and shortness of breath, is important.
It is also important to practice prevention. Public servants say you can take simple steps to be healthier.
"Keep track of what you eat, because sometimes you eat more than you realize," says Carrie Brainard, Ohio Valley Health Department in the Ohio Valley.
"Monitor your water intake and drink at least 8 glbades of water a day. Try to eat healthier most of the time and start walking. Even if you take small steps or two or three blocks, simply adding these steps to your day can help lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and heart health, "says Braidnard.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department wants to inform the public of what it takes to have a healthier heart.
During the week of February 11-15, visit one of their offices to take pamphlets on hypertension, stroke and other heart-related substances.
MOVHD staff will also have pedometers and food diaries to distribute to help you track your food choices, water usage and activity levels.
While you're there, win a tote bag filled with good-humored items, including a heavy hoop, a bottle of water and a cookbook.
