Huawei devices are no longer able to use microSD cards

Things are getting worse for Huawei. We mentioned Friday that Microsoft had extracted all of Huawei's laptops from the Microsoft online store. Huawei also found that the ban imposed by the Trump administration resulted in the loss of its access to Google's Android operating system, Intel chips, Qualcomm chips, and ARM designs. The bans go so far as to ensure that Huawei can not develop its internal chips that use technologies covered by patents filed in the United States.

Huawei has been removed from the SD Association and is no longer on the list of its members. This means that Huawei can no longer officially use microSD cards or microSD card slots in its devices. The ban does not affect the smartphones that Huawei already has on the market, but it will affect future devices. Android devices usually have microSD card slots, which is considered by many to be one of the big advantages of Android devices on iPhones.

The SD Association is the non-profit organization that controls SD product standards. It controls all formats, from SD cards to microSD cards used in smartphones. Companies that are not members can not officially produce smartphones, tablets or other devices using standards or media. It is also interesting to note that Huawei had previously diverted from microSD cards and slots to a system developed by NanoMemory. It is not clear if this NanoMemory technology uses patents that may be subject to restrictions.

Huawei has also been "temporarily restricted" to the Wi-Fi Alliance. This does not mean that Huawei can not use Wi-Fi technology; it only means that it can not contribute to standards until the ban is lifted. Huawei could probably survive the loss of Windows software, but the loss of access to Android is a blow, and losing access to the standard microSD card adds to the flow of blows Huawei.
