Huawei never stops: the P30 Pro, with its 4 sensors in the back, can it still innovate?

[ad_1]

We were in Paris on Tuesday to witness the grand launch of the new range of the Chinese telecom giant. Six months after a remarkable Mate 20 Pro, does he still have enough innovation under his elbow to amaze us? The answer at the end of this first grip, before a more in-depth test.

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei is doing well. Its sales figures are growing steadily, despite the international crisis, linked to accusations of industrial espionage (and even military, on behalf of the Chinese government).

A crisis that results in the loss of certain markets, in terms of telecom equipment (4G, 5G) operators. Several Anglo-Saxon countries, suspicious, marched. Europe is waiting for the moment, but Huawei is a partner of most major players, such as Proximus in Belgium. The situation seems less compromised in our countries.

That being said, Huawei is pretending nothing and continues to talk more and more about him with his new smartphones. Outings more and more spectacular, with more and more people, the press becoming almost a minority against partners and bloggers, influencers, etc.

The P30 have been unveiled in Paris, once again, a glamorous city where people love to take pictures of themselves …

Market dictatorship

It is not easy for a brand to bring twice a year significant innovations on a smartphone. The market is certainly very dynamic, which justifies such a number of devices and such hyperactivity of manufacturers, but it can not reinvent itself every 6 months.

But that's what Huawei (Mate and P range) and Samsung (Galaxy S and Galaxy Note) are trying to do. Apple is a little more reasonable and is satisfied with a single renewal of iPhone per year.

This does not seem very reasonable but the first one who stops following such a rhythm will inevitably pbad for a second-rate actor, not very innovative. A real dictatorship of the market …

So what can Huawei do when his Mate 20 Pro, released last fall, already had everything for him: three sensors on the back and the new integrated fingerprint recognition on the screen?

Answer: put a 4th sensor in the back and insist on the revolutionary prowess of the photo (and video) part.

Everything for the photo … night

From the traditional period of teasingHuawei had made it clear that his camera's performance in photography would be the center of attention.

It is true that it has always been the main difference between a mid-range and a high-end. The quality of the photos is important for many users, so it is better to attract with more performance, options, features.

Like many other brands, for many years, Huawei promises once again to "rewrite the rules" in the field. According to the Chinese giant, solid N.2 worldwide in terms of smartphones sold, so it also pbades through 4 sensors in the back.

The Leica Quad Camera system therefore includes a 40MP main sensor dubbed SuperSpectrum, an ultra-wide-angle sensor of 20 MP, a "tele-objective" (for zooms) of 8MP and a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor.

The result ? A new record of the DxOMark test standard for photo and video. Thanks to the extra light captured by the main sensor SuperSpectrum, using a rather complex technical process (replacing green pixels with yellow pixels), this allows to reach values of 409.600 ISO (for the pro version). Result, according to the demos conducted by Huawei live at the press conference, capabilities to see what the man does not see, and so the photo of a starry night becomes almost "illuminated" so the sensor takes the light. This is very natural but the result seems there … Lovers of photos in the dark, in the evening, at night or in the dark … you are warned!

Those who like to zoom will be delighted by the TV x5 optics, x10 hybrid zoom (little loss of quality) and even x50 digital zoom (there, we normally begin to see the pixels). Stabilized, the zoom seems particularly effective …

The ToF sensor, it deals with the depth of fields, and will segment better the different layers of shots that compose certain scenes. Perfect for successful portrait modes with blur on the front and the background. It is said that they are 3D sensors, because they allow, for example, to shape a face by turning around.

On the video too, the P30 Pro promises wonders, especially when it is darker, thanks to an improved stabilization system.

These are just numbers and ads, however, that must translate into real improvements in everyday life. We will talk about it during a thorough test in two weeks.

A beautiful technical sheet: 999 € for the Pro version

To these prowess announced, Huawei adds several elements specific to high-end smartphones. For the P30 Pro (999 €): 128 GB (256 optional for 50 € more) storage and 8 GB of RAM, the chip Kirin 980 Mate 20 Pro, the screen of 6.47 "FullHD + (2340×1080 pixels ) almost borderless and with a very discreet notch for the front camera of 32 MP, invisible fingerprint reader because built-in screen, waterproof, very fast charge (40W) of its big battery (4.200M mAh) .

At first glance and before we could try in detail the P30 Pro that was loaned to us by Huawei for a test period, we must face the facts: the Chinese giant did not have the time, in 6 month since the release of its remarkable Mate 20 Pro, to find new features really speaking for the general public, for whom the concepts of photography (and video) professional, with many options, are quite distant. Most users, as we know, use the automatic mode 9 times out of 10 … With the P30 Pro, it will undoubtedly have the most beautiful photos that can succeed with a smartphone in early 2019, but the differences with the competition will probably not be glaring.

The "normal" version of the P30 includes less RAM, a smaller screen (6.1 ", it's still big …), a photo sensor less, but its value for money becomes interesting: 749 €.

Huawei, as always, spoils the earliest buyers of P30s. They will leave this time with a smart speaker Sonos One (value: 229 €), and in addition, the wireless charger fast Huawei (only for the Pro version, value: 59 €).
