AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW / WAGT) – Frances and Herbert Delaigle have been married and in love for over 70 years.
Husband and wife married 71 years die the same day
Their relationship was so strong that husband and wife took their last breath a few hours apart.
The love story of the couple began in a cafe in Waynesboro, Georgia, where they first met at the age of 16 and 22 years old.
"Frances worked in a little cafe we had in Waynesboro, called White Way Cafe," said Delaigle in an interview with WRDW / WAGT in 2018. "I saw her come in, go out and get in, and I had staring at her, and then I finally had the guts to ask her if she would go out with me one day or the other. "
Their first date was at the cinema. A year later, he skipped the question.
"I asked her if she had me as a husband and she said, of course," Delaigle said.
It was an easy yes for her. But, it was the wedding that hardly took place.
"He was always late," said Delaigle.
The preacher almost did not marry them because they were an hour late to go to church, according to Herbert Delaigle. After some convincing convictions, the preacher rushed into the service.
It was also cheap wedding.
"$ 5, that's all I paid for it," he said laughing last year. It would be less than $ 55 today.
Frances Delaigle said that her husband made her laugh all her life. And even at age 93, he was still making jokes.
"What do I like the most at home?" he asked his fiancee. "I do not know," she laughs.
But clearly, they both knew what he was talking about.
Herbert Delaigle died at 2:20 am on Friday morning. Then 12 hours later, his wife Frances Delaigle died at 2:20 pm.
"It's amazing how they have been together for 71 years and now they are together in paradise," said the Delaigle family in a statement on Friday. "What an incredible love story!"
