Police Affairs Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi said on Tuesday evening that the final decision on the extradition request for suspended intelligence response team leader DCP Abba Kyari to respond to allegations of complicity in the fraud of $ 1.1 million perpetrated by Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, will be taken by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking on the issue on a TV show called “Politics Today,” Dingyadi said the Nigerian government is trying to ensure that due diligence is done on the issue as it has international connotations.
He said: “The issue of Abba Kyari has become a public domain and I think by now everyone has heard that the police, in their very wisdom, in their usual way of becoming transparent and fair to all, have put in set up a committee to investigate all these allegations ”.
“We also reported that the committee submitted the report to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
“We have also submitted this report and recommendations to the Attorney General of the Federation for legal advice, then we will submit it to the President for final consideration.
“So you can see that even though this case is a local affair here, it has international connotations.
“We need to do due diligence to make sure we’re doing the right thing. We have to consult with the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Justice before a final decision is made.
“What is important is that Nigerians know that the police leadership is in place and that they have done what they are supposed to do. I hope people will wait and see what action is taken on this. “
FBI indicted DCP Kyari and four others in the Hushpuppi Internet scam that led to Kyari’s suspension and the IGP’s setting up of a special investigative panel led by CFIIB DIG Joseph Egbunike to investigate the allegations.
The panel has since submitted its report to the Police Services Commission while the commission has begun its own internal investigative processes into the matter.
