Ernest Owusu Bempah, Communications Director of Ghana Gas Company offered a wholehearted apology to Ibrahim Mahama, businessman and brother of former President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama.
In a two-page statement copied to GhanaWeb, Owusu Bempah said his comments on UTV’s Adekye Nsoroma on March 3, 2018 were “without merit and were made without due regard for Mr.’s hard-earned reputation. . Ibrahim Mahama and should not have done the same ”.
“That the statement I made about Mr. Ibrahim Mahama was not true then and is not true now and can never be true and that I had no reason to make this statement Wrote Ernest Owusu Bempah.
He continued: “Regardless of how it turned out, the fact remains that I should never have made such a statement from Mr. Ibrahim Mahama. The statement was clearly derogatory and defamatory of the person and the enviable achievements of Mr. Ibrahim Mahama. I sincerely regret making this statement about him.
On March 3, 2018, Ernest Owusu Bempah, while contributing to a political discussion on UTV’s Adekye Nsoroma, said: “… because krono na w’abo, krono na w’abo” to say “il [Ibrahim Mahama] has stolen…”
Ibrahim Mahama sued Owusu Bempah and UTV. On October 18, 2019, the High Court presided over by Her Ladyship Georgina Mensah-Datsa ruled in favor of Ibrahim Mahama that Ernest Owusu Bempah and Despite Group of Companies Limited should publish in the Daily Graphic and on UTV an unqualified apology to the complainant. and a retraction of said defamatory statement with the same weight as the original defamatory statement.

Enforcing the court order, Ernest Owusu Bempah said: “I sincerely and humbly apologize to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for the unwarranted and unfortunate statements about him. I am sincerely sorry and humbly ask for his forgiveness and I also apologize to his family and all the people who were touched by my denigration of the person and the position of Mr. Ibrahim Mahama in society.
Owusu Bempah said that when he decided to apologize to Ibrahim Mahama, he called him on the phone and he [Ibrahim Mahama] referred to him [Owusu Bempah] like a “younger brother and even a guest” in his home.
“These acts on his part make me regret my conduct even more and I say without reservation that I am sincerely sorry for what I said about him,” he continues his apologies.
