Assin Central lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong has said he is against the provision of free coronavirus vaccines to Ghana. He said the provision of free vaccines to developing countries by developed economies will further increase the overdependence on them by third world countries for their support.
Speaking on his TV channel on Wednesday, March 10, the businessman called on his fellow Ghanaian businessmen to stand up and support the government in procuring the vaccines.
“I’m not bragging, but I’m ready to give Akufo-Addo a million dollars to get the vaccines,” he said. “I don’t like the idea of always going to developed countries to ask for support like we can’t do anything for ourselves,” he added.
Ghana has received 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute of India.
The West African country became the first country to take delivery of COVAX vaccines when it received the shipment at Kotoko International Airport.
Already, the vaccine deployment plan has been well received by the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The vaccine deployment plan that we have submitted to the WHO, which has released this shipment, has been well received,” President Akufo-Addo said Sunday, February 28 in a televised address to the nation.
“They did the work of a young man, and our nation is indebted to them. We naturally also thank the contributors and managers of the COVAX Facility. “
