Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, expressed his deep gratitude to members of his party, and in particular to NDC MPs, for elevating him to the post of Speaker of the 8th Legislature.
According to him, when he made the decision not to run again as a Member of Parliament, he had created an Institute of Parliamentary Affairs for Africa, so he was in transition to support the democratic group when he took off. realized that he could become the president of the 8th legislature.
“I couldn’t sleep, but a certain spirit descended on me that I was going to win. That is why on that day I promised you that we will win this battle, ”Alban Bagbin told former President John Dramani Mahama at a symposium organized by the NDC in memory of the former President of the Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings.
Bagbin said, “the God who started it all will accomplish it.”
In a highly contested secret ballot in Parliament on Thursday, January 7, 2021, for the post of Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former member of Nadowli Kaleo, was elected president of the 8th legislature of the Fourth Republic.
By polling 138 votes, Alban Bagbin won against his predecessor, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, former deputy for Dome Kwabenya, who collected 136 votes.
Mr. Bagbin’s election sent shockwaves through the aisle where NPP MPs sat, most of them stunned.
After a long night of drama and confusion amid a laborious process that led to soldiers illegally invading the parliamentary floor, NPP MPs were left speechless when Bagbin won when his party was in the strength of 137 elected deputies.
