President Nana Akufo-Addo says that despite the unfortunate events that led to Martin Amidu’s exit as special prosecutor, he does not regret having appointed him.
Former Attorney General Martin Alamisi Burns Kaiser Amidu was appointed to lead the fight against corruption for seven years, but almost three years after being sworn in, the Special Prosecutor (SP) resigned.
Mr. Amidu cited what he called “political interference in the independence of his office” as the main reason for his decision to step down.
In addition, he said, his office was under-staffed who were mostly on secondment, a situation that made it nearly impossible for his team to perform their duties effectively.
On the 4th floor of Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo took the oath of 43-year-old lawyer Kissi Agyabeng for a seven-year term as special prosecutor.
Describing him as highly qualified, the president tasked him with independently fighting corruption.
“Kissi Agyabeng is coming into office with the necessary ability, experience and values and I am very confident that he will do a good job and that we as members of the executive will respect the independence of his office and provide the office. the support needed to enable him to work. effectively, ”said Nana Akufo Addo.
The president also assured that the government would increase budget support to other anti-corruption institutions to help fight the canker.
Kissi agyabeng
Kissi Agyabeng takes office as second special prosecutor. Research and writing.
He received the Bentsi-Enchill Award for Best Graduate Student from the University of Ghana Law School in 2001.
He continued his education at the Ghana School of Law and was admitted to the Ghana Bar in October 2003, winning the EN Sowah Memorial Award for Best Student in Family Law.
Since then, he has successfully argued numerous cases in Ghana’s superior courts and participated in several international arbitration hearings.
Mr. Agyebeng has a wide range of expertise in consulting for public sector institutions including AG Department, EXIM Bank Ghana Ltd, Youth Employment Authority, National Lottery Authority, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited and the Ghanaian Olympic Committee.
He is also associated with the African Center for Cyber Law and Cybercrime Prevention and National Mock Court Coordinator for the Commonwealth Moot Court Competition on International Criminal Justice.
He was also vice-chairman of the Ghana Football Association’s Appeal Board.
About the Office of the Special Prosecutor
The Office of the Special Prosecutor of Ghana was established after an act of the Parliament of Ghana passed the Office of the Special Prosecutor Bill in 2017.[1]
The office serves as an independent investigative and prosecutorial body to investigate corruption, bribery or other criminal matters at the national level, whether in the public or private sector.
