Daniel Asiedu, the man alleged to have badbadinated the MP of Abuakwa North in 2016, JB Danquah-Adu, pleaded with the Accra High Court for it to orders the Ghana Prison Service to find a place to sleep.
Yesterday, Asiedu, aka "Sexy Don Don," said during her audition that there was no possibility to sleep in Nsawam's medium-sized prisons, a situation that forced her to stay up at night.
He further complained to the court that, although he had been placed in pre-trial detention, he had been sent to a section reserved for convicts in the overcrowded prison.
"Where I am is full of convicts and is congested; I can not find a place to sleep. I have to stay up at night. Please tell the prison officers to find me a place to sleep, "Asiedu told the court.
Given Asiedu's badertions, the presiding judge, Judge George Buadi, asked a prison officer, who was in the courtroom, if that was the situation in Nsawam's prisons.
The officer stated that he was not aware of Asiedu's allegations and that inmates in Nsawam's middle prisons had places to sleep.
However, he promised to respond to Asiedu's badertions and to inform the court at the next hearing.
Legal aid for Asiedu
In the meantime, Judge Buadi ordered the clerk of the court to write to the legal aid scheme in order to provide a lawyer to represent Asiedu during the trial.
The order followed the absence of a lawyer at yesterday's hearing to represent the alleged murderer.
"Given the nature of the offense and the penalties it entails, it is necessary for the suspect to obtain a lawyer.
I order the clerk to write to the Legal Aid Scheme to call on a competent lawyer to represent Daniel Asiedu, "Judge Buadi ordered.
The court had planned to hold a seven-member jury and also plead the plea of Asiedu and Vincent Bosso, the second defendant, at yesterday's hearing, but was unable to do so because of the lack of legal representation of the accused.
Although Bosso told the court that he was still seeking attorney Muniru Kbadim, the attorney who represented the two defendants while incarcerated in the Central District Court of Accra, Asiedu insisted on obtaining the services of a lawyer of the International Criminal Court. (ICC).
According to Asiedu, he did not trust any lawyers in the country and believed that only an ICC lawyer could represent his interests.
In response, Mr. Justice Buadi told Asiedu not to have such a negative perception of lawyers in Ghana, because any lawyer appointed to represent him would defend him properly.
The president of the court also told him that only lawyers registered in the bar and allowed to practice in Ghana could defend him.
The hearing is continuing on April 15, 2019.
Charges
Mr. Danquah-Adu was murdered on February 9, 2016 in his residence in Shiashie, near Accra.
Prosecutors charged Asiedu and Bosso with conspiracy to commit robbery, while Asiedu was indicted separately for murder and robbery.
