Former President John Dramani Mahama
The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), an opposition party, John Mahama, said he would abandon some of the newly created ministries that the Akufo-Addo administration had created if the NDC was re-elected to power.
The Akufo-Addo administration now has 125 ministers, 30 more than its predecessors.
Speaking during a retreat of the party's election officers in Tamale, Mr Mahama said: "It is said that we have reached the world record of 125 ministers. Certainly, some of these ministries will go under a NDC government. "
The former president argued that a large number of ministers constituted a heavy burden on public funds.
"Government spending has exploded and they are not able to raise enough revenue to meet the high costs. And part of the high spending is due to the large number of political appointments. "
Citing a few examples, Mahama pointed out that the minister responsible for procurement was redundant.
"The Ministry of Purchasing will go. You have a full procurement authority overseen by the Ministry of Finance. Why do you need a purchasing minister?
The most recent additions occurred when Ghana welcomed six new regions in 2019; West, North, Oti, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and Northeast regions.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has always justified her "elephant-sized" government by saying, "As you know, some say my government is too big and you are too many [Ministers]. I strongly believe in the saying that the proof of the pudding lies in eating. "
