The 2020 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliament (PC) candidate for Assin North constituency Abena Durowaa Mensah is optimistic about winning hands down if she challenges the upcoming by-election.
“I will win hands down if NPP runs for the by-election. Although I lost with over 2,000 votes in the 2020 election, I hope to win with over 50 votes, no matter who they nominate. Even if they bring Joe Gyakye Quayson, or Asiedu Nketia, I’ll still win because I’m the crowd’s choice, ”she said.
According to her, the decision is for the NPP to choose whoever it deems fit to represent it, but if it is chosen, it will never disappoint the party.
When asked why she lost in the 2016 election, Ms Mensah said her party members, including the president and his cohorts, worked against her even after working hard in the constituency.
Speaking on the trial of their opponent, the NPP PC said they knew Mr Quayson had dual citizenship but was not the right person to act and therefore welcomed the court’s ruling in cancel the legislative elections of 2020.
His comment comes after the Cape Coast High Court declared the 2020 parliamentary elections held in the constituency null and void.
The decision was rendered on Wednesday July 28, 2021 by the court chaired by Judge Kwasi Boakye.
In his judgment, Judge Boakye confirmed that the 2020 Democratic National Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Joe Gyakye Quayson, violated the constitutional provisions regarding dual citizenship.
The move means the NDC’s seats in parliament have fallen to 136 from 137 for the NPP until a by-election is called to determine who wins the seat.
But, in response to the development of Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Ms Mensah said on Thursday that she was up to anything and ready to lead her party if asked.
