Match-of-the-day specialist Ian Wright has named his Premier League squad of the season – Everton and Tottenham both having more players than Liverpool.
The only Reds man the former Arsenal striker has picked so far from his 2020/21 season squad was left-back Andy Robertson, despite Liverpool leading the table by four points ahead of matches of Boxing Day.
“I only have Robertson [from Liverpool] because they had injuries, ”Wright explained, although Jurgen Klopp has been named his coach of the season so far.
“The emergence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin is to be welcomed,” Wright said as he spoke through his front line, which did not include any of Klopp’s men.
“It wasn’t that long ago people were saying Calvert-Lewin just wasn’t good enough for this level and wouldn’t score goals.
“I remember telling someone that I watch him and he does everything an attacker does; near the post, far post, tie the game, amazing in the air, he wins his own flick-ons.
“And when I looked at him you wonder if he could add goals to his game, so we’re talking elite.
“Now he scores, you look at him and you think he’s now the quintessential center-forward: scoring goals, scrappy in the box, he’s in there.”
Alongside Calvert-Lewin on the front row were Spurs pair Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, though Mohamed Salah leads the Premier League Golden Boot race with 13 goals, at least two more than any other player.
“You have Sadio Mane and [Mohamed] Salah and Gini Wijnaldum who played brilliantly, Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, even [Bukayo] Saka, ”Wright added.
“But for me this team, these guys have really made a good impression on their teams this season.”
While Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones missed Wright’s side, he also had positive words for the teenager Scouser.
Wright added: “The way they’ve fed Curtis Jones so far – I watch him do rear wheel kicks, just pass and take punches when he gets the chance – he already looks like he does. a complete player.
“Thiago will come back but can Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain change him now?
