General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as BWI, did not go out of his way to victimize the late Major General. Mamman Vatsa during the military trial which ordered the execution of Vatsa.
General Rtd Haliru Akilu, former director of national intelligence and director of military intelligence several times in the 1990s, revealed it Thursday in Abuja.
Akilu said BWI’s loyalty and empathy for his friends and family in particular did not align with the narrative about the head of state’s role at the time.
On March 5, 1986, he was executed by the BWI military regime, which was his childhood friend, following a conviction by a military court for treason associated with an abortive coup.
“When you get to know General Babangida, you will understand that these accounts did not correspond to the picture. As a leader at the time, IBB had to go through the proper process of military trials for any act of treason and there are people who have that responsibility, ”he said.
Akilu said that over time the various legacies of BWI would be unveiled for the next generation to learn and understand that every Nigerian leader has contributed immensely to national development.
“IBB set up a solid infrastructural development for the nation during his rule. We have this bringing the federal capital of the country back to Abuja. It was a great decision that only BWI capacity leaders can make.
“The second is the construction of military barracks in Abuja, the construction of the National Assembly complex, the Villa Aso Rock (State House), the Federal Secretariat as well as the economic and social empowerment of Nigerians, especially women with the creation of Better Life for Rural Women as MAMSER.
Likewise, leader Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, politician and businessman, said BWI’s legacy must be highlighted through adequate information from the general in order to dispel the negative narrative about his regime.
He said the BWI he knows is a statesman who should be emulated by young Nigerians in order to build a better nation.
“Gen. Babangida is a detribalized Nigerian. Many examples abound where he showed his humility and concern for me and the Nation. At my father’s funeral, he quietly came for the funeral that no one would attend. ‘admitted and he stayed all day with me.
“As a former soldier from Biafra, General Babangida showed us no difference after the war. We fought on opposite sides, but that didn’t make him discriminate against us. We are good friends until today. I have met a lot of people in business and politics through him.
“He is the most under-represented leader in Nigeria because he has yet to write about himself having his own side of the story on matters concerning his management,” he said.
In addition, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar said the rise of the BWI started from a humble background and became the best leader Nigeria has had despite all obstacles.
“Babangida is patient, dedicated and loyal to Nigeria and her friends. He is most affectionate towards family, friends, colleagues as well as subordinates.
“This event to mark her 80th birthday by her children is a spectacle that a legacy had been left from home. As parents, we are happy that our children have reached the stage to continue with a legacy of excellence and dedication, ”he said.
Notable personalities present at the event are former Senate Speaker David Mark, Professor Tunde Adeniran, former Minister of Education, Dr Muazu Babangida, former Governor of Niger State, among several other members of his diet.
