Idris Elba is negotiating to join Andy Serkis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster in Fox's fantasy action movie, "Mouse Guard", under the direction of Wes Ball.
Fox is planning a live movie using the performance capture technology used in the "Planet of the Apes" movies, in which Serkis starred as the leader of the Caesar monkey. David Peterson created, wrote and illustrated the "Mouse Guard" series, launched in 2006 and located in a medieval world without humans. The stories are centered on a fraternity of sworn mice serving their mice.
Fox began developing the film, based on the "Mouse Guard" series of graphic novels, in 2016. Matt Reeves, director of "War for the Planet of the Apes", produced "Mouse Guard" through his 6th production, Idaho, with Ross Richie and Stephen Christy, both of Boom! Studios – the editor of "Mouse Guard". Joe Hartwick Jr. also produces.
If agreement is reached, Elba will play Celanawe, a hermit figure who has long lived outside of mouse dwellings. Serkis will play the evil blacksmith Midnight and Brodie-Sangster will play Lieam, one of the youngest members of the guard. Production should begin in the late spring.
Variety reported earlier this month that the island of Elba was that of Warner Bros. choice to replace Will Smith in Deadshot in the sequel to "Suicide Squad". He plays in Netflix's upcoming show "Turn Up Charlie" and will appear on the big screen for "The Fast and Furious", the sequel to "Hobbs and Shaw" alongside Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, as well as for the adaptation "Universal" from Cats. He is replaced by WME, The Artists Partnership and Ziffren Brittenham.
The news of this deal was announced two days after 20th Century Fox became a member of Walt Disney Co.
