The Ghana Infectious Disease Center has warned Ghanaians refusing to follow Covid-19 safety protocols while insisting the government may not be able to help those who become seriously ill.
This is because the Ga East Municipal Hospital center is currently lacking oxygen, which is essential for keeping people with severe Covid-19 conditions alive.
Speaking in an interview with Radio AsaaseCenter interim director Dr Joseph Oliver-Commey said the designated intensive care unit for Covid patients is packed to capacity and can no longer accommodate critically ill patients.
“At the moment we are limited by the lack of oxygen and it is not only the center of infectious diseases, almost all intensive care centers are limited by oxygen, including the use of oxygen at high speed, very expensive that patients cannot afford, “Dr Joseph Oliver -Commey said.
The centre’s acting director continued, “We’re not saying we can’t take care of the patients, but the things to use to care for them, the nurses, the oxygen is a problem. You reduce that only to oxygen, I said oxygen plus the staff so I could have oxygen but not the staff and if I don’t have the staff why am I putting a patient on the bed ? “.
Amid the growing number of recorded Covid-19 cases in the country, Dr Joseph Oliver-Commey has instructed Ghanaians to prioritize their well-being by strictly adhering to preventive measures.
According to him, anyone who refuses to do so is putting themselves at risk and may not receive the necessary help from the government in the event of an infection.
“This is my humble plea to all Ghanaians, if you get sick and you get seriously ill the government can’t help you, I wouldn’t be able to help you and your neighbor next door, so consciously avoid contracting COVID-19, ”added Dr. Oliver-Commey.
As of Tuesday, July 13, 2021, active cases of Covid-19 in Ghana have exceeded 2,300 and could even worsen, the Ministry of Health anticipating a third wave of pandemic in the coming weeks.
