The Vanguard operation, a joint working group of military police and police fighting illegal mining, arrested on Wednesday two Chinese and their two accomplices suspected of carrying out illegal mining activities in the District Birim North, Eastern Region.

The two Chinese nationals, Wan Zhi Dong, 49, and Shi Zhi Hai, 51, were handed over to the Interministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, accompanied by two excavators following their arrest.

This was contained in a statement to the Ghana News Agency by Captain Andy Sowatey, Vanguard's public relations manager.

According to the statement, the two locals, Imoro Yankey, 42, and Kwadwo Apau, 41, are currently in custody at the Afosu Police Station while waiting for further investigations.

"With the lifting of the ban on small-scale mining, some unapproved miners have had to hide behind the concessions of some licensed artisbad miners to escape Vanguard patrols.

"The Vanguard operation however is putting in place measures to eliminate them," he said.

According to the statement, five local suspected illegal mining operations were apprehended in Prestea Huni Valley District, in the Western Region, and were handed over to the Prestea District Police for further news. investigations are conducted on their activities.

Six other residents were arrested in the Wbada Akropong district in the central region and handed over to the district police for further action.
