President Nana Akufo-Addo, in a rather unusual way, mocked his fierce former contender for the post of New Patriotic Party flag bearer, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
The president, who featured a team that escorted him to visit the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as part of his 4-day tour of the Ashanti region, teased Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the minister of the ‘Food and Agriculture, and Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen on their presidential ambitions.
In the presence of Otumfuo and his elders, the president said: “I am here with the Minister of Transport, Minister of Public Works and Housing, the Chief of National Security, Chairman One; Wontumi, Minister of Food and Agriculture; Owusu Afriyie, who wants to be president. I also have here with me someone who has long been eyeing the presidential seat, the Minister of Trade and Industry; Alan Kyeremanten, a very hardworking man. All are doing a good job ”.
The president’s comments made everyone in the room laugh, including the Asantehene.
Dr Akoto’s campaign posters have appeared on social media, intensifying speculation about his presidential ambitions.
Apart from him, there has been some support for the potential presidential candidacies of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen.
NPP deputy general secretary Nana Obiri Boahene, however, criticized people who began campaigning for some potential NPP flag bearer candidates ahead of the 2024 general election.
Campaign activities have yet to be sanctioned by the National Executive Committee and the National Party Council.
The ruling party is expected to hold its presidential primary in 2023.
